Womenspeak! The Circle of Silence – Shirley Shackleton speaks

Op donderdagavond 23 september vindt de 13e editie van Womenspeak! plaats in de Centrale Bibliotheek. De avond staat in het teken van Oost Timor. Shirley Shackleton, vooraanstaand activiste en auteur van het recent verschenen boek 'The Circle of Silence' is aanwezig voor een lezing en een gesprek. De voertaal is Engels.
Shirley Shackleton is de weduwe van Greg Shackleton, een van de vijf journalisten die in Balibo - Oost Timor - werd vermoord tijdens de Indonesische invasie in Oost Timor. Shirley heeft sinds de dood van haar man Greg een onuitputtelijke strijd gevoerd om de waarheden op tafel te krijgen. Ze werd mede daardoor een vooraanstaand activiste voor gerechtigheid in en voor Oost Timor.
Het boek 'The Circle of Silence' is een persoonlijk verslag van Shirley's leven als mensenrechtenactivist sinds de dood van haar man Greg en zijn collega's. Haar verhaal is inspirerend en onthult Shirley's overtuiging en vastberadenheid om de waarheid boven tafel te krijgen en gerechtigheid te vinden. Niet alleen omtrent de gebeurtenissen die leidden tot de moorden op de journalisten, maar voor democratie en vrijheid in Oost Timor.

Women Speak! is a unique and inspiring debate series on art, politics, science and social issues, covered from an intercultural gender perspective. Womenspeak tackled issues such as honor crimes, pornography and radicalization, the connections between gay rights and Muslim identities, the global economic crisis and diaspora initiatives. Inspiring speakers included Noreena Hertz, Mona Meta, Marielle Pals and Rosi Braidotti and talented performers such as Soula Notos, DJ Nadia and Zanillya were already part of Womenspeak! On Thursday September 23 2010 the 13th edition of Women Speak! will take place. Main guest is Shirley Shackleton, author of the recently published book The Circle of Silence, which covers her tumultuous life.
Shirley Shackleton is the widow of Greg Shackleton, one of the five “Balibo journalists” who where killed during the Indonesian invasion of East Timor in 1975. Shirley has, since her husband’s death, fought an endless battle to reveal the truth about their demise and has become an icon for the struggle of an independent East Timor.
The book The Circle of Silence is a personal account of Shirley's life as a human rights activist since the death of her husband Greg and his colleagues. Her story is inspiring and reveals her conviction and determination to get the truth out and find justice for her husband, his colleagues, and the people of East Timor. This episode of Women Speak! takes place during the Peace Week and is organized in cooperation with Foundation Free East Timor and with the support of Vrede van Utrecht.
